20 years of putting victims first
2026 marks 20 years since the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances, the only universal treaty dedicated to preventing and eradicating the practice. Under the slogan “Victims first. Actions now,” the anniversary puts victims’ rights to truth, justice and reparation at the centre. As enforced disappearances persist worldwide, universal ratification and full implementation remain urgent priorities. On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances (August 30), the UN notes that only 78 Member States are currently parties to the convention.
